WELLINGTON COUNTY – The latest weekend report from public health shows a 23% weekly increase in active COVID-19 cases, while the number hospitalized with the virus is up from 11 to 16.
The Dec. 14 update from Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) shows 117 new cases reported over the weekend.
There are 266 active cases in the region, up 23% from 216 a week ago.
The latest report, released the same day the region was moved to the province’s red COVID-19 alert level, marks the second weekend in a row that new cases have reached triple digits.
Previous weekend totals were 100 on Dec. 7, 76 on Nov. 30 and 75 on Nov. 23.
Thirty-three of the new weekend cases are in Wellington County, which now has two people in hospital and 45 active cases, up from 31 a week ago.
Local case counts in Wellington County are as follows:
- 12 in Mapleton;
- 10 in Minto;
- seven in Erin;
- seven in Guelph-Eramosa;
- five in Centre Wellington;
- two in Wellington North; and
- two in Puslinch.
Guelph has 43 new cases, 119 active cases and eight people in hospital.
Dufferin County has 23 new cases, 39 active cases and five in hospital.
As of Dec. 14, 15 schools in the WDGPH region are reporting active cases of COVID-19, including four in Wellington County.
There are also eight facility outbreaks in the region, including three in Wellington County.
