Doug Smith, of the Hillsburgh and District Lions Club, says the outdoor rink in Victoria Park is “truly a community project.”
He explained the town roads department plows the parking lot, the fire department floods the rink, and several local youths help the club maintain it.
He noted the rink was “well used” last year, including at the Valentine’s Day evening skate, which 75 people attended.
This year the club plans to host a family skate on Feb. 16, the new holiday known as Family Day. Smith said the group hopes to get the rink started as soon as possible and asked council for a $700 donation to purchase rink maintenance items.
Council passed a resolution appointing five people to a rink committee (including councillor Barb Tocher) and sent the request for funds to the 2009 budget process.
