Minto wants to consider options to maintain its sewage treatment plants.
The public works committee recommended that written notice be provided to the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) about the contract that expires Dec. 31 and note the town’s intent is to prepare a request for proposals to operate town sewage plants.
When asked by councillor Rick Hembly, Public Works director Norm Fisk said there are a number of companies that can do similar work.
He said he had talked to another director of public works in Wellington County recently which had ended its relationship with OCWA two years ago.
That municipality made its decision around the same time Minto had renewed its OCWA contract.
“There’s money to be saved here,” Fisk said.
“We’re also going to look at maybe doing it ourselves.”
Anderson asked how much the town is paying OCWA.
Duff estimated it is around $158,000. “There’s a fair bit of bureaucracy that we’re paying for.”
Anderson said he had also talked to a number of other municipalities. He added that with the amount of training the town has been required to go through to upgrade staff to comply with all the other regulations, it makes them very capable of doing the work the town is are looking at.
