Police are reminding motorists to be prepared for winter by driving according to the road and weather conditions.
Wellington County OPP officials suggest the following safety tips:
– keep an eye on the weather and if travel is not required, stay home;
– ensure the vehicle is winter ready and has received regular maintenance;
– plan trips and check weather conditions;
– notify a family member or friend of destination and potential arrival time;
– slow down and create distance between vehicles;
– do not pass winter maintenance vehicles;
– do not drive if not comfortable doing so;
– have extra windshield fluid in the vehicle and at least half a tank of gas;
– have an emergency kit (battery jumper cables, first aid kit, shovel, multi-tool, blanket, extra clothing, high calorie non-perishable food supply, flashlight, ice/snow scraper, cell phone, etc.); and
– check the Ministry of Transportation website for road conditions prior to leaving (do not call 911 or the OPP for road reports – log on to www.mto.on.ca/english/travellers).
Police are also reminding motorists of the importance of clearing all snow and ice from their vehicle.
“Driving a motor vehicle with partially cleared windows is not only a hazard to you but also to others on the road,” states an OPP press release.
“Under the Highway Traffic Act it is illegal to not have a clear view out the windshield and to the sides. The fine for this violation is $110.
“Please be considerate and take the time to remove all ice and snow from your vehicle before driving, especially from the hood, windows and roof.”
