OPP officer charged in bus-cruiser collision

An OPP officer is being charged in connection with a collision involving a police cruiser and a school bus here.

Police responded to the collision on Dec. 9 at 3:50pm on Scotland Street between Millburn Boulevard and Belsyde Avenue.

Police say their investigation revealed the officer drove into the back of the stopped school bus.

“It was stop and go traffic and [the officer] just didn’t realize the bus was stopped,” OPP Sergeant Dave Rektor told the Advertiser.

The driver of the bus and the students on board were uninjured.

The officer, who sustained a minor injury, was taken to Groves hospital, treated and released.

The officer was issued a provincial offence notice for an unsafe “start from stopped position.”

Despite suggestions to the contrary on social media, Rektor said there is no evidence indicating the incident involved distracted driving.

“We heard from independent witnesses … we had technical collision investigators on the scene,” said Rektor.

“This was the appropriate charge.”
