WELLINGTON COUNTY – Inspector Steve Thomas, commander of the Wellington County OPP detachment, is saying goodbye to the county and hello to a new opportunity.
Thomas has been with the county’s OPP detachment for nearly 20 years, serving as commander for the last three.
He has accepted a position in the OPP’s highway safety division, beginning on April 7.
Police board chair Andy Lennox announced Thomas’ departure at the March 27 county council meeting.
“Inspector Thomas has taken an opportunity elsewhere in the OPP and will not be with us in the future,” Lennox stated.
“I wish him well in his future endeavours at his new assignment.”
Thomas, who replaced Paul Richardson as detachment commander in 2022, spent most of his career in Wellington, serving in various capacities.
Asked by the Advertiser for an interview, Thomas declined and instead emailed a statement.
“I will truly miss working in Wellington County from all of the wonderful officers, civilians and auxiliaries I’ve worked with over the years,” Thomas stated.
“To the many community partners I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with, including our media partners, I have always valued our relationship.”
Thomas added it has been “an honour to serve the citizens of Wellington County for the past 20 years.
“I very much appreciate the support of the public, and the excellent relationship we’ve enjoyed with all our partners.”
Lennox told the Advertiser county officials are sad to see Thomas go, but “we’re happy to see he’s moving his career in a forward direction.”
He noted Wellington County OPP staff sergeant Karen Medeiros will serve as interim detachment commander, starting the week of April 7.
“She seems like a very good police officer and we look forward to working with her in the interim,” Lennox said.
He explained the OPP will lead the process to select a replacement for Thomas, though as board chair he will get to participate in the process.
“I’m not expecting any major activity in terms of interviews till later in April or beginning in May,” he said.
