OPP dive team removes body from Elora Quarry

The OPP dive team has removed and identified the body of a man that drowned in the Elora Quarry on Monday evening.

Dead is Thanh Le, 32, of Kitchener.

The OPP’s Underwater Search and Rescue Unit (USRU) searched the quarry Tuesday morning and located Le's body at around 10am.

On June 24 at about 6:15pm a Grand River Conservation Authority staff member called 911 to report a swimmer in distress at the quarry, located on Wellington Road 18 just outside Elora.

The Wellington County OPP, firefighters from the Centre Wellington Fire Department and paramedics with Guelph-Wellington EMS attended the scene, with police and firefighters conducting an on-water search.

After that search failed to locate the man, the USRU was called in to assist with the investigation.

Le's family was notified that he was missing and presumed drowned on Monday night. Some members of the family were at the quarry on Tuesday when the dive team removed the body.

The details surrounding the drowning are not known at this time. Le, who was at the quarry with friends, was one of about 100 people at the popular swimming spot at the time of his drowning.

Coroner Ian MacPhee said an autopsy will be performed by Thursday.
