Wellington County OPP is among the first detachments in the province to have full in-house mobile crisis response capability.
A report presented to the county’s police services board in January provided details of the Wellington County OPP Mobile Crisis Unit.
Establishment of the unit was announced internally on Dec. 6 by Inspector Scott Lawson.
The unit was created in collaboration with the Waterloo Wellington Dufferin Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network.
Two full-time CMHA mental health clinicians will be located at the OPP’s Centre Wellington operations centre in Aboyne and will provide immediate crisis response for all calls involving mental health and addictions.
“This will have a significant positive impact on response to these complex callsfor-service,” the report states.
At the Jan. 29 county council meeting, councillor Lynda White said if the clinicians are needed, the unit “will come out to a home or whenever there is a crisis.
“This could save a lot of time and provide a lot of help for mental health issues,” said White.
