The OPP would like to remind the public that police will continue to deploy RIDE programs throughout the county during the festive season.
Drivers caught with a blood-alcohol concentration above the legal limit not only face the possibility of criminal charges, but also an administrative driver’s licence suspension and vehicle impoundment.
With that in mind police are encouraging the community to celebrate the holiday season responsibly. They say whether hosting a party or attending as a guest, people need to have a plan and prevent drinking and driving. The OPP offers the following tips:
– determine who the designated drivers will be, have a plan to take a taxi ahead of time, or get a ride from a friend or family member;
– hosts should consider limiting their drinking, and this will make them more aware of how much alcohol their guests are consuming;
– if a host suspects a guest has consumed too much alcohol, they should ask for their keys and call them a cab; or offer a place to stay for the night; and
– if someone planning to drive should not be driving, call the police (it may be difficult, but the potential for serious or deadly harm to your friend and others is very real).
The OPP thanks drivers that make smart and responsible choices when it comes to drinking alcohol.
