One vehicle stolen, others entered during Fergus crime spree

Both locked and unlocked vehicles targeted overnight on July 13

FERGUS – Police are looking for clues, and possibly more victims, after one vehicle was stolen and items were taken from other vehicles overnight here recently.

On the morning of July 13, Wellington County OPP began receiving reports of thefts from vehicles in the Cherry Hill Place/Millburn Boulevard neighbourhood in the south end of Fergus.

“In total eight reports have been filed, including one involving the theft of a vehicle,” police stated in a July 14 press release.

“Investigators believe the number of people effected is likely much higher.”

Police say suspects entered “a number of locked and unlocked vehicles” in the neighbourhood in the early hours of July 13 and stole items including currency, keys, garage-door-openers, wallets and a white 2015 Ford Escape.

For some reason, several facts included in an OPP Twitter post about the incidents were left out of an OPP press release sent to media over 15 hours later, including:

  • there are “two unknown suspects” involved;
  • “in some cases, windows were smashed to gain access if valuables were visible”; and
  • keys for the stolen vehicle were left in another nearby unlocked car.

Investigators would like to hear from all those affected by the thefts.
