Rockwood is set to have one more stop sign.
On Nov. 20 Guelph-Eramosa council approved the installation of a new stop sign at the intersection of Richardson and Balaclava streets.
Director of public works Harry Niemi explained the Valley Road to Richardson Street watermain connection project included improvements to Richardson Street.
“As a result, the geometry of the intersection of Richardson and Balaclava has been improved, resulting in Richardson acting as a true through road and Balaclava functioning as side street intersection,” Niemi explained in his report.
The proposal is to have a stop sign for northeast traffic on Balaclava at Richardson.
Previously there was a yield sign for northwest traffic on Richardson Street approaching Balaclava.
“The geometric improvements now allow for a straight alignment along Richardson through the intersection with Balaclava, where previously the traveled asphalt portion of the intersection included a slight deviation,” Niemi wrote.
Niemi also saidthe stop sign on Clara Street coming out to Pasmore Street was not included in the stop sign bylaw.
“The sign’s always been there but if somebody didn’t stop and was smart enough to look at the bylaw they could get off paying the ticket because it wasn’t a bylawed stop,” Niemi said.
Mayor Chris White asked if this meant there would be a stop sign on both sides of Richardson Street.
“No Richardson would come straight through,” Niemi clarified. “So this traffic would some straight through, there would be no stop on Richardson.”
Councillor Mark Bouwmeester asked why public works was suggesting a stop sign and not a yield sign.
“We’ve debated that,” Niemi said. “I think it opens it up for too much risk there because people don’t really follow how you’re supposed to yield now-a-days with the increasing traffic on the roads.”
Council changed the bylaw to include these two stops.
