The Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) is a five-year commitment by Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial governments that will support Canada’s agri-food and agri-products sectors.

The federal and provincial governments are committing up to $417 million for strategic initiatives over five years (2018 – 23) to help grow Ontario’s agri-food and agri-products sectors.

Cost-share funding under the Partnership supports targeted projects in three priority areas, with research and innovation continuing to be a key focus across all programming:

• Economic development in the agri-food and agri-products sectors;

• Environmental stewardship to enhance water quality and soil health; and

• Protection and assurance to reinforce the foundation for public trust in the sector through improved protection and assurance systems in food safety and plant and animal health.

CAP contains a combination of national Business Risk Management (BRM) programs which stabilize farm incomes, and non-BRM initiatives (Strategic Initiatives) intended to support the sector to be more competitive, sustainable, and support adoption of best practices.

BRM programs assist farmers manage significant risks, such as extreme weather events, disease, pests and market volatility that are beyond the ability of producers to control or mitigate.

Cost-share funding under CAP is merit-based and project funding amounts are individually established based on project categories.
