MARDEN – After remaining sealed for 23 years, the Marden time capsule is set to be opened soon, and people are invited to witness the event.
The Township of Guelph/Eramosa, along with volunteers who have generously donated their time to this event, would like to invite the public to the opening of the capsule on Sept. 10, in front of the Marden Community Centre and the Enabling Gardens, beginning at 1pm.
Refreshments and snacks will be provided.
“The Marden School Time Capsule gets a third chance at holding on to memories for the next generation to see,” said Corey Woods, Guelph/Eramosa Ward 2 councillor and chair of the Heritage Committee.
“It is going to be incredibly exciting to see what comes out of the second time capsule, and equally as thrilling to contribute ourselves for the next generation to see what life was like today.”
In 1997, the Marden time capsule was opened by students at the time, who found items placed by students over three decades prior.
It was re-sealed in 1997, signifying the 155-year anniversary of the first school at Marden, as well as the 35th anniversary of the current school at the time.
A 25-year time period for re-opening was determined by the same students. The opening date was pushed back to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After opening, the capsule will be refilled with new items for future generations.
The new opening date will be 50 years from now, in 2073.
Alongside the capsule opening, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the antique road grader in front of the Marden Community Centre, which has recently been refurbished.
Join the Township of Guelph/Eramosa Heritage Committee in opening up and being a part of history.
