Officer provides information on scams at Clifford Merry Makers meeting

“You are in control!” was the message sent loud and clear by Wellington OPP communications officer Cheri Rockefeller at the Merry Makers meeting on Jan. 7 at Jamesway Manor in Clifford.

Rockefeller explained the elderly are vulnerable targets who usually have a nest egg, own their own home, and have good credit.

“You worked hard for your money, so don’t be fooled into giving it all away to a fraudster,” she cautioned.

Rockefeller urged anyone winning a prize not to send money, give out personal information, or feel pressured in any way.

She recommended victims of potential scams stay focused and calm and call family if suspecting foul play on the phone.

If offered any services for internet, medical products, energy savings, or work on the house, she recommends saying no and hanging up.

If the sales pitch sounds too good to be true, it is probably phony, Rockefeller suggested, adding it’s a good idea to keep doors locked to strangers.

She advised the group to protect personal information such as bank cards, credit cards, and personal identification numbers (PIN).

When in doubt, talk to someone, she advised.

“Don’t let a feeling of embarrassment wipe out your savings.”

Rockefeller urged the group to contact local police or the anti-fraud centre at 1-888-495-8501 or www.antifraudcentre.ca if they suspect they’ve been approached by scam artists.

Karen Campbell and Carol Reiner thanked Rockefeller for her presentation.

The group ventured to Jemstones Bar and Grill in Clifford for a meal at the end of the meeting. The Merry Makers will meet again on Feb. 4 at Jamesway Manor. Every senior is invited to attend meetings held the first Thursday of each month from September to June.
