passed away peacefully on Friday, June 19, 2020 at Rockwood Terrace Nursing Home, Durham, in her 96th year. She was born March 3, 1925 in Cumberland Bay, New Brunswick, the daughter of the late Ruby (MacVicar) and Murray Barton. Cherished dearly by her children Kitty and Joe Stone of Lindsay, Donna and Fred Bolger of Durham, Bonnie Whitehead of Clifford, Tammie Whitehead of Hanover, Stan and Marcie Whitehead of Durham; grandchildren Brandon and Jodie Whitehead, Kimberly Whitehead, John Whitehead-Bolger, Amy Whitehead, Glenn Whitehead, Charissa Fidler, Zoey Fidler, great-grandchildren Ella and Peyton Whitehead; brothers Harold and Glenna Barton of Fredericton, N.B., Frank Barton of Fredericton, N.B., John and Nora Barton of Chipman, N.B., Leonard and Eleanor Barton of Cumberland Bay, N.B., Stanley Barton of Cumberland Bay, N.B., sister Lorna Barton of Lower Millstream, N.B.; and brother-in-law Arthur Stableford of Sunderland. Predeceased by her husband Glenn Whitehead (1985), daughter Heather and her husband Tony Hoover; brothers Lawrence, Allison, Gordon; and sisters Mona, Doris, and Betty, and sister-in-law Joyce Stableford. In her youth, Ethel moved to Fredericton to care for her ailing Aunt Ethel, cleaned houses for room and board, worked at a shoe store, a book store, and Dominions. In St. John, she worked as a photographer’s model, worked at the MRA Department Store and Woolworth’s, and met her husband-to-be at a photo studio. Starting a family, they moved to Ontario and for the past 48 years lived in Clifford. She returned home each summer to Cumberland Bay for the family reunion and enjoyed side-trips to the other Maritime Provinces as well as trips out west. She was a member of the UCW at Knox and the Horticultural Society and joined the Merry Makers Seniors. Over the years, her bowling days came to an end and her gardening dwindled to tending window boxes laden with pansies. Soap operas and visiting with family filled her days, and puzzles weren’t kept just for winter. Lawrence Welk was a Sunday staple. A private family service by invitation only was held at the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston, on Monday, June 22nd at 1:00 p.m., with public visitation from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. The service was recorded and available on the funeral home website. Rev. Dr. Art Hiley officiating. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the Knox United Church, Clifford, would be appreciated. On-line condolences may be left at
