Ron passed away at Wellington Terrace in Elora, Ontario in the arms of his loving wife Joanne (Sauer). Ron and Joanne celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on May 2nd. Despite Ron’s dementia, we know that he appreciated Joanne’s steadfast partnership and advocacy until the very end. Ron would have turned 80 on June 20th, a birthday proudly shared with his granddaughter Kathryn. His children, Robin (Gary), Sherry, Jim (Lynn) and Rick (Tina), brought him tremendous pride (and headache!). He loved laughing and causing trouble with his grandchildren Codie, Robert, Kathryn, Carson and Jamie. He cherished time spent with his siblings, Larry (Donna), Norma (Dave), Bob (Anita), Sandy (Pete), Betty, Paul (Kacey) and Mark. Ron is fondly remembered by Joanne’s family, many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Rose and Len, his older brother Larry, and his siblings-in-law, Kathy, John Kienzle and John Hinschberger. Ron’s openness and social nature meant that he made friends wherever he went. A skilled craftsman woodworker, Ron was happiest at home in his self-built workshop. He was proud to be featured in the Elora Fergus Studio Tour where he displayed his creations in wood. His many pieces will be cherished for years to come. Growing up in Maryhill, Ron’s early years were spent helping on the family farm and creating mischief with siblings and friends. He was a life-long learner, eager to read and absorb information about history and the world. Ron was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed many trips to Ottawa, Toronto, Georgia and Florida to see his kids and grandkids. He also delighted at family trips to Jamaica, Turkey, Eastern Canada, Cuba, Europe, the cottage at Wollaston Lake, Bayview Wildwood Resort and more. He never tired of reminding his kids and grandkids of the difficulty of walking to school in a blizzard, uphill in both directions. His humour was evergreen. Dementia is a thieving disease, but Ron kept his sparkle until the end. His family and friends are fortunate that his presence enriched their lives. Ron, Dad, Grandpa – we love you and we miss you dearly. Ron’s family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the many staff and healthcare providers who cared for him at Wellington Terrace Long Term Care home. Their kindness and compassion filled his final days with comfort and peace. We will be forever grateful for their commitment to his care.
