Passed away peacefully in Fergus, Ontario on October 12, 2023, in her 100th year after suffering with dementia and further complicated with COVID-19. Helen will be greatly missed by her loving husband of 71 years, John Veldman, three children, Alan (Cheryl) of Calabogie, ON, Norma of Elora and John (Sylvia) of Kitchener and beloved grandchildren, Jennifer (Darrin) of Stouffville, Jessica of Elora, Shanna (Matt) of Hamilton and Tara (Tyler) of Toronto and great-grandchildren, Owen, and Olivia of Stouffville. Helen was born in Kelty, Scotland where she joined the British Army in 1942. She emigrated to Guelph, Ontario as a young woman with her Aunt Rachel after having completed her service with the British Army in 1946. She met and married John in Guelph where they raised their family before moving to Fergus. Helen was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 229, Elora and the Ladies’ Auxiliary. She was also a member of The Order of Scottish Clans and served as Worthy Matron (President). In addition, she belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star. Helen loved being around people. She loved playing cards with her family and rarely missed Thursday night Bingo. Helen, the ‘Tour Bus Lady’, organized and ran shopping trips to the States for more than forty years. Her bus trips were entertaining, fun, and organized with precision – these trips are fondly remembered. Helen will be dearly missed by family and friends. Special thanks go to Wellington Terrace for their kind and compassionate care during her stay there. A Funeral Service for Helen was held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 11:00am at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, Fergus Chapel. Reception followed. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Wellington Terrace LTC or Knox – Elora Presbyterian Church.
