It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Jacob van der Valk peacefully at home with Gloria by his side on Sunday, March 21, 2021 following a year long battle with cancer. Predeceased by his wife Mildred (Rose) van der Valk (nee Pollowy) April 13, 2012. He leaves behind his partner Gloria Laythorpe and his family Jacob Jr, Wesley (Michelle), Allyson (Desmond) and Joseph (Desiree) as well as Gloria’s family Cheryl Marsland (Bob) and Nancy Laythorpe (Glenn). Jake will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Cameron, Shannon, Brooklyn, Blake, Lawson and Maximus as well as Gloria’s grandchildren Hayden and Wyatt. Survived by his brothers Peter (Karen), Herb (Debra) and John, sisters Martha (Ian) and Jane as well as many nieces and nephews. Sisters in Law Linda, Shirley (Mark) and Betty-Jane. Jake will be missed by his many golfing, curling and Legion friends and especially our Friday Night Friends. A private Celebration of Life was held at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, Fergus Chapel on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 2:00pm. The livestream link is available on the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home website. Due to Covid-19, the service was attended by immediate family only. A private interment took place at Elgin Mills Cemetery, Richmond Hill. The family would like to especially thank Dr. M. Easterbrook, Dr. Chris Lund, the wonderful oncology team at Groves Memorial Community Hospital as well as the team at Waterloo Wellington LHIN and Bayshore Nurses who helped us navigate the last few weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Groves Memorial Community Hospital (Oncology Department), Fergus Curling Club or Royal Canadian Legion Branch 275 Fergus.
