SMITH, Kenneth John

March 14, 1949 - August 26, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Kenneth “Kenny” Smith announces his passing. Ken, of South River, born and raised in Erin, ON, in his 75th year passed peacefully at Hospice Wellington on August 26th, after a well fought and courageous battle with cancer, with both daughters and sister Marie by his side. Our family will remain forever grateful for the care Ken received by the compassionate staff at Hospice Wellington. Ken was welcomed with open arms by late wife Sally (Holtom), parents Katherine (Ferguson) and Russell, sister-in-law Julie, and brothers Alan, Ronald and Robert. Ken leaves behind daughters Kelly (Pat Noone) and Macey, grandsons Ethan and Evan, sisters Joanne and Marie, brothers Ed and Norman, many loved nieces and nephews and a select few friends who became family over the years. Ken was a hardworking family man who devoted nearly 25 years to Laurel Steel in Burlington, before retiring to the cottage with Sally. They spent many years together enjoying fishing, four wheeling, snowmobiling and playing games of crib and euchre with family and friends. Truth be told though, he’ll never find a better partner than sister Marie. Ken remained hardworking in retirement as well, cutting and splitting wood up until only months before death. Ken loved dogs. German Shepherds in particular. There was always one at his side. He had recently adopted a shepherd named Piper. She needed a home, and he needed her. She was a good source of therapy, visited at hospice and will remain loved by family. The rainbow bridge was full of dogs waiting to greet Ken. He crossed over with Sonja, Ralph, Wylie, Jake and Rex, all with wagging tails. Ken will be remembered as the strong silent type. A man of few words. A man always there for friends and family. Kenny, a friend, a brother, an uncle, a dad, a “gramps”. He will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Guelph Humane Society, Ontario German Shepherds In Need, Groves Memorial Hospital, Hospice Wellington or the Erin Legion Branch 442 are appreciated. Please join us in a celebration of life for Kenny on Sunday, September 15th at the Erin Legion, 12 Dundas Street East, Erin, ON from 2-5pm. A private family interment is to be announced.
