of Palmerston passed away suddenly at the Guelph General Hospital, on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 in his 72nd year. Beloved husband of Sandra (Mann) for 49 years. Cherished father of Jacqueline Smith of Toronto and Tyson Smith (Victoria Cafik) of Palmerston. Much loved Poppa of Hazel and Charles. Brother of Ruth Gilbert and the late Zen Rybak of Southampton, Karen Day and the late Ken Day of Drayton and Ginny and Dave Franklin of Moorefield. Brother-in-law of Cheryl and Terry Yost, the late Barbara Moore and John Mann. Fondly remembered by cousin Arthur and Elizabeth Smith, his nieces, nephews and many friends. Predeceased by his parents Charlotte Smith, Don and Dora Smith and his mother-in-law and father-in-law Winnifred and Charles Mann. Fred loved his community and over the years was active in many organizations, Palmerston Fire Department for 35 years, Palmerston Lions Club and was past president, active in many capacities at Palmerston United Church, a member of the Frank Lambier Royal Canadian Legion Branch 409 and Palmerston Hospital Foundation Gala Committee. Fred loved sports, golfing, curling, he coached Minor Hockey, baseball and played for the Palmerston Imperials for many years and was an avid parent and fan. His smile and laugh would brighten your day when you met him on the street. Fred loved fishing and hunting at Manitoulin Island, cottaging and golfing at Port Elgin. The family received friends at the Heritage Funeral Home, Palmerston on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. A funeral service of remembrance was held in the Palmerston United Church on Friday, December 10, 2021 at 1:00pm. Spring interment in Elma Centre Cemetery. The funeral service was video taped and is available to view on the funeral home website. As expressions of sympathy donations to Palmerston Fire Department, Palmerston Lions Club or the Palmerston Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
