SCHIECK, Grant

Passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 9, 2023. Grant has been reunited with Edith, his sweetheart and wife of 62 years. Grant was born outside Drayton on the family farm, literally in the house on the farm. Grant’s parents moved twice during his formative years, the last one being to a farm just outside Moorefield on the 8th Line. He met Edith at a baseball game in the Moorefield park and they married in 1958. They settled on a farm just outside Moorefield to raise a family. Eventually moving to Drayton and then Palmerston. Grant and Edith were blessed with 4 sons: Brad & Dianne of Arthur, Mark & Karen of Elmira, Dale & Lorie of St. Jacobs, Dene & Denise of Drayton; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Grant was a people person – he loved to talk and tell stories whether that was with family, friends, or strangers. Grant had many roles during his lifetime. He was a husband and father first and always but his life included farming (25 years), driving school bus (40 years), Drayton Agricultural Society (60 years), lifetime Moorefield United Church member, ambulance driver and Moorefield Fire Department (22 years), Drayton Rotary (32 years), OFA member all his farming career, avid curler (25 years), and community driver after he left farming (25 years). He also served in leadership roles as a school board trustee and on the boards of the agriculture society, the church, and the OFA. Many thanks to Brad and Dianne for opening their home to Grant for over two years after Edith passed allowing friends and family to visit and reminisce freely. It was due to this that Dad got his wish to spend his last days at home. Grant was with us for 93 years from 1930 to 2023. It is not the number of years between those two numbers that matter, it is how you spend those years that matter. And Grant put a lot into every one of those years. You’re at peace now. Relatives and friends were invited for visitation at the Heritage Funeral Home, Drayton on Wednesday September 13, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:30 to 9:00pm. The Funeral Service of Remembrance will be held in the Moorefield Community Centre on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 11:00am followed by interment in Bethesda Cemetery. Donations to Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation, MS Society of Canada, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
