Nielsen, Johan (John) Hojbo (1933-2012) – Passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of Friday, May 25th, 2012. John grew up on the family farm in Billum Denmark, the son of Aage and Tove Nielsen. Anxious to see the world, at 16 he joined the Danish merchant navy and travelled many nautical miles to ports of call around the world. In 1956 John married his beautiful bride Helga (Frandsen). Their honeymoon trip took them to Canada, a new life, and a great adventure. Thriving as part of the Danish expatriate community, they took on a new language and made many new lifelong friends. John is survived by Helga and their 3 children; Gary (Cathy Johnson), Linda (John Taylor) and Dan (Sylvie LaPerriere). He was also the proud and loving grandfather of Ben, Kristina, Cameron, Laura, Emma, William, Audrey and Marie. John is also survived by sisters Anna-Grethe (Bernhard) and Inge-Birgit (Thomas) of Denmark. John’s working life in Canada included Calvert’s Nursery in Brampton, Domtar Manufacturing in Etobicoke, and ownership and operation of Tecum Furniture stores in Hamilton. In recent years, John spent many happy days working with friends and fellow members of Sunset Villa Danish Canadian Club, and served faithfully on its Board of Directors. Interment was held on Wednesday, May 30th at 2:00pm at Mindeparken, 7150 Concession 1, Puslinch, refreshments followed at Sunset Villa Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Sunset Villa Association would be appreciated.
