Passed away on Monday, May 6, 2024 at the age of 87. Erwin will be remembered by his wife Christel, daughter Petra, grand-children Michaela and Thyssen, and his son-in-law Michael. Erwin was one of eight children and is only survived by his younger sister Ellen. Erwin was born near Hamburg Germany and spent years working on the Main and Rhine rivers as a merchant marine and had even obtained his captain’s papers. He immigrated to Canada in 1967 with his fiance, Christel, where he apprenticed with his older brother Ewald as a baker. Erwin was an entrepreneur and bought his brother’s bakery in Etobicoke in the 1970’s. After building up the business, he sold it and moved his family to Guelph where he started and ran a new successful bakery. Erwin sold his business in the late 1980’s and retired to the country. In his retirement years, Erwin continued to bake wonderful treats for his family and friends. He loved to make beautiful stained glass windows and wall hangings; read mystery novels; was obsessed with solving his weekly newspaper crossword puzzles; and took an active role in the lives of his grandchildren. Erwin was physically active and was committed to his daily 9km morning walk routine rain or shine. He was known in the neighbourhood as the elderly gentleman who marched along the country roads near his home in the early morning hours, tipping his hat to all that passed by. He will be remembered privately by his family and there is no public service planned. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to Hospice Wellington or your local food bank.
