It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of John “Barry” Moffit at home surrounded by family on January 14, 2024. Loving husband of Eileen Moffit (DesOrmeaux) for 54 years. Dedicated and loving father of Terry Lynn Hadaway (John), and Ella Marie Moffit. Special father figure for Blaine and Ryan Williamson. Proud grandfather of Taylor (Atia Poster) and Blake (Shae Finamore) Hadaway. Dependable brother-in-law to Shirley MacMillan (Frank), Dorothy Gilder-Marshall (Denton), Jean Willis (George), and Ted Willis (Mabel). He is survived by his sisters Lorraine Pine and Joyce Campbell. He always had a story and laugh for all his nieces and nephews. Barry has joined his parents John “Danny” Moffit (1996) and Irene Mae Kreller (Clarke) (2005), and his brother Russell Moffit (2008). Barry was born on November 14th, 1946, in Fergus Ontario, he grew up in the Belwood/Fergus area and moved to Guelph as a teen. Barry was an extraordinary hardworking man who loved the outdoors. Fishing, cutting wood and building something he “just thought of” were some of his favourite hobbies. He was most happy in his garage tearing down skids, sorting metal or creating something new out of scrap or wood. He was a man who could fix almost anything, if you needed a part for something he would usually have one (or could build what you needed). He welded, cut trees, repaired engines, and helped his neighbours, family, and friends whenever he was asked (and sometimes even when not, just because he had an idea!). If you knew Barry, you would have heard about his 2 perfect hands of Cribbage. A 29 hand in a lifetime is rare, to have the exact same hand twice he thought was incredible, we often wondered the odds. He thoroughly enjoyed playing in the Guelph Cribbage League and was an honoured team captain for several years. Nearing the end of his life, family and a few close friends became a priority. We are extremely grateful for the wonderful memories we were able to create in the last couple years. Interment will follow in the summer of 2024. Donations to the Juravinski Cancer Center, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 234 are appreciated.
