Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at Arthur Caressant Care at the age of 81. Son of the late Lawrence and Nellie Mitchell. Fondly remembered by many cousins and local friends. A special thank you to Ernie Bennett for your special visits with John and to Bob Smith and other neighbours who helped John when he was unable to care for his home. John was a lifelong resident of the Fergus area, growing up on the family farm in Ennotville. He worked for over 30 years for Riverglen Farms, much of the time spent handling livestock and working on the old Anderson farm. John was a very hard-working person. His parents instilled in him great standards for life. John was a social person. He loved to talk to people. In later years, especially after he retired, you could often see him sitting on a bench in downtown Fergus talking to various friends that would stop by and chat. He was always interested in how you were and what you had been doing. He enjoyed a visit with anyone and would thank you for taking time to speak to him. He got to know a lot of people that way and forgot very few of them. When unable to drive he would walk everywhere, to the auctions at Parrs north of Fergus and even to Elmira to get some favourite bread on sale. He would often head out on a trek before daylight. In later years, he enjoyed coffee time with friends at the local Tim Horton’s. John’s quick wit and intelligence with names, dates and recollection of events will be missed. A special thank you to staff and volunteers at Arthur Caressant Care for their care and compassion. John was very content there and enjoyed the various activities. Also, thanks to the staff at Groves Memorial Hospital for their care during John’s time there. Memorial donations may be made to Groves Memorial Hospital. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
