Bernice Margaret Millson, of Guelph, passed away on Saturday, May 11th, 2019 at the age of 89 years after suffering complications from a heart attack. Beloved wife of 61 years to the late Morley Millson (2010). Dear mother of Ross, loving Grandmother of Krystal Nicholson (Mark), and Great “Gramma ‘Nice” to Liam, Gemma and Devinn, and her Grandpuppy Trooper. Predeceased by her mother Wilma, step-mother Eva, brother Lloyd, father Charles Oakes, daughter Janet Johnstone (2001) and her Millson brothers & sisters-in-laws. Survived by sister-in-law, Gloria Oakes, daughter-in-law, Clyde Nobert, as well as many dear cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Drs. N & W Ruddock for their many years of care, as well as the Guelph Paramedics, and the staff at the Guelph General & St. Mary’s Hospitals for their thorough care and efforts which gave us a few extra days with our beloved, Bernice, who was still cracking jokes in the hospital. Bernice started taking care of her family from the young age of 16 years, when her mother passed away, and never stopped. Still living in her own home and cooking family meals, we were always told to just bring ourselves. Her Grand & Great-Grandchildren loved Gramma ‘Nice’s cooking and Bernice loved watching them eat! Bernice loved keeping up with the goings on of family, friends and neighbours through visits, calls, letters, and even facebook updates that would be printed for her to see. She would keep a mental note of all the stories she would want to talk about on the next call or visit. She enjoyed baking cookies for her younger neighbours and having four-legged visitors too. Bernice spent her working life on the family farm on the 5th line Eramosa, at the Royal Dairy in Guelph and delivering The Guelph Mercury. Over the years, Bernice enjoyed attending many family picnics, cooking/baking without measurements, making her preserves and chili sauce, gardening, country music & the Grand Ole’ Opry, The Lawrence Welk Show, playing cards whether it was a small group or a big family New Year’s Day gathering, knitting and crocheting afghans and her famous slippers, and shopping trips with Krystal. Her next goal was to get a walker and venture to this Costco place that she had heard so much about! In her 70’s, Bernice survived breast cancer which she thought she was too old to have – donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in her memory would be appreciated. Bernice will live on in our hearts, memories and through her many recipes from the grandkids’ favourite carrots, whipped potatoes, and pies to her famous Christmas pudding sauce, and nearly addictive cheesecake. Just a couple of months ago, Bernice mentioned that she thought she would like a 90th birthday party to get everyone together for some sandwiches and cake. Please join family to celebrate Bernice’s 89 years and 7 months of life with an open house memorial at the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph on Sunday, June 2nd from 2:00 – 4:00pm. Memorial contributions of stories, photos or mementos would be appreciated, or just bring yourselves.
