MEINDERTSMA, Pier

Of Guelph, passed away at Hospice Wellington on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at the age of 96. Predeceased by his loving wife, Roely (nee Geerlinks) in 2003. Much beloved father of Shirley Killens (Doug) and Murray Meindertsma (Kim); and cherished grandfather of Matthew Bakker (Sam Williams), Jeremy Bakker (Laura Fay) and Taylor Meindertsma (Geena Slip). He was the dear brother of Maaike Glazema of the Netherlands, and was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters of the Netherlands, South Africa and Alberta. Pier was a dairy farmer in Eramosa Township, where he enjoyed the comradery of many other dairy farmers on the 4th Line. He was fortunate enough to be able to retire at an early age and enjoyed many pastimes and hobbies including travelling, building a family cottage in Point Clarke on Lake Huron, driving to Florida to escape the winter months, woodworking, playing euchre and pool. He loved meeting new people wherever life took him, and made many great friends along the way. We would like to send out special thanks to so many people that made our Dad’s final years more enjoyable for him. First, to all the special friends at Riverside Residences, where he lived for 25 years, thank you for all the support, the many euchre games, pool games and good times in the woodworking shop. Secondly to all the caring staff at the Ellington Retirement Home, for taking such good care of Dad while he was there. Thirdly, a special thank you for the kindness of staff and volunteers, that made his short time at Hospice Wellington so calm and peaceful. And a special mention to all the personal support workers over the years that enabled him to live independently for so long. You are all very special people who make such a difference! Friends visited the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & ChapeL, 206 Norfolk Street, Guelph, Ont, on Monday June 17 at 12:30pm to 1:30pm. Funeral service was held in the funeral home chapel at 1:30, with a reception that followed. Arrangements entrusted to Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel (519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com). In lieu of flowers, we ask you to consider memorial contributions to Hospice Wellington, or a charity of your choice. A tree will be planted in memory of Pier Meindertsma in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
