McIILWRAITH, Elizabeth (Betty) Johnstone (Nee Hood)

McIILWRAITH, Elizabeth (Betty) Johnstone (Nee Hood) (DWBB) – May 7, 2017. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on September 1, 1923, daughter of John and Amelia Hood (Nee Fletcher). Predeceased by husband George Alexander McIlwraith in 2011, her sister Isobel Hood (1938) and Grandson Scott Van Kampen (2009). Survived by her wee brother Iain Hood (Eileen) of Symington, Scotland and her loving children: John McIlwraith (Lee) Freelton, Alistair McIlwraith (Dawn) of Cambridge, Isobel Dobbin (Jim) of Paris, Heather Perrin (Donald) of Cedar Valley, Dawn Van Kampen (George) of Laurel. Betty is also survived by 15 Grandchildren 16 Great Grandchildren. WWII began on her 16th birthday and Betty was off to Wigtownshire to serve in the Women’s Land Army. There she met wee Geordie, with his bright blue eyes. Married on Nov 15, 1944 in Glasgow, with the WLA as their ceremonial honour guard brandishing their pitch forks! November 1951, Mum, Dad, John and Alistair emigrated to Canada to start their new adventure, Isobel and Heather arrived soon after, and finally Dawn. All proud Canadians with plenty of Scottish blood! Betty and George enjoying their retirement years on the farm at Laurel. A Celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Monday, May 22, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Tweedsmuir Memorial Presbyterian Church, 6 John St, Orangeville, ON. Reception to follow at a location to be announced.
