McCABE, Mary Bernadette (nee Jakab)

McCABE, Mary Bernadette (nee Jakab) 1925 – 2018 It is with great sadness that the family of Mary McCabe announces that she passed away peacefully at the St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Guelph on Monday, February 5, 2018 in her 93rd year, after a long battle with cancer. Mary is predeceased by her parents Barbara (1962) and Frank (1967), husband Robbie McCabe (1976), brother Frank (1992), and sisters Annie McCabe (2007), Liz Feth (2013), and Madeline Epps (2017). She is survived by her son Tim (Beth), grandsons Ian and Chris, and sisters Helen Crawford and Marg Schneider. Auntie Mary will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Mary was born at sea as her parents emigrated from Europe in 1925. She, along with her brother and sisters, was raised on the family farm near Mt. Pleasant, Ontario, where they were market farmers and provided music and entertainment for many local harvest dances and parties. Mary met Robbie McCabe in 1953 and came to the Arthur area in 1955, where she adapted to life on the McCabe family farm. She was quite often seen in the fields plowing, swathing, or harvesting. Mary was a regular at local farm auctions where she had a keen eye for livestock and horses. After Robbie passed, she retired to a small hobby farm where she returned to her roots and had a large garden, a fruit stand, and raised a few head of cattle. Mary was an active member of the Catholic Women’s League in both Kenilworth and Arthur. In her later years she was content to watch over her two grandsons and tell stories of the old days. The family would like to thank Kim at the LHIN and the Bayshore Health nurses for in-home care, the nurses and staff at St. Joseph’s Health Care Centre, the nurses at Louise Marshall Hospital, staff and nurses at Groves Memorial Hospital, and Dr. Tom Landoni for providing care and support. You truly went out of your way to make my mom’s last days comfortable. The family received friends at the Crawford Funeral Chapel, 243 George Street, Arthur on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Kenilworth on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.  www.heritagefuneralhomes.ca
