MacRae, Shirley Carruthers (nee Smith); Peacefully, at the Wellington Terrace in Elora, ON on January 20, 2009 in her 84th year. Predeceased by her parents William “Bill” and Marjorie Smith of Winnipeg, MB and her brother William “Jock” of Rome, Italy. Survived by her sister Pamela Pemberton (Col. Alan B.) of London, England, her sister-in-law Eleanor Smith (Don Fraser) of Fergus, ON and many nieces and nephews. Lovingly remembered by her sons Hugh of Santa Fe, NM and Ian (Arlette Greau) of Elora, ON. Fondly remembered by her grandchildren Laina, Nicholas, Devin, and Celine and her great grandson Yarrow. Founding member of the Elora Festival, and St. John’s – Kilmarnock and St. Margaret’s Schools formerly of Elora, ON. Former Assistant Headmistress of St. Margaret’s School. Recipient of the Order of Niagara for her contribution to the music tradition at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Elora, ON. Shirley left Winnipeg and moved to Toronto and subsequently settled in Elora in 1955. Memorial Service will be conducted at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, corner of Smith & Henderson Sts. in Elora, on Saturday, January 24th 2009 at 12pm. Interment to take place in the family plot in Elora in the Spring.
