MacLENNAN, Alan Douglas. October 4, 1924 – August 18, 2016.On May 20, 2017 family and friends are invited to join in a celebration of Doug’s life in Fergus, at Belsyde Cemetery at 11:00, followed by a lunch reception at Breadalbane Inn. Doug was born in Eyebrow, Sask. and he joked about it. At the end of WWII, he served in the occupation forces in Holland, building bridges. He returned to play pro football for the Hamilton Wild-cats of the ORFU, predecessor of the CFL. In 1951, after his marriage to Elva (nee Maw) his love to swim using the Fergus Pool brought him back to the Belwood area to farm on the 6th Line. Doug’s family prospered in this generous community. ‘The Farm’ and Belwood Lake were often visited by family and friends. In 1968, Doug gave up farming and became the first Welfare Administrator of Wellington County. Over the next 20 years the department grew exponentially with a great group of staff. During this time, he also lead the establishment of the Ontario Branch of Clan MacLennan. He became a Lieutenant of the clan in recognition of his work. His love of water sports and boating was evident in his participation in Master Swimming, and Power Squadron. Many summers were spent diving on Georgian Bay discovering old coal wrecks. In 1988, Doug and Elva retired to Delta, BC where Doug continued to boat, scuba dive, swim, golf, do woodworking projects and spend time with grandchildren. As a master swimmer he loved winning and setting records for his age in BC. Doug was predeceased by Elva in 2011. He was the loving father of Marg, Ruth (Chris), Tom, and Don (Sandra). He was a dedicated grandfather to Eric Balac (Nicole), Nicholas and Mitchell Whyte, Richard and Rachel MacLennan, a proud great grandfather to Fynn Balac and brother to Marg Krucker. In his later years, Doug suffered from hearing impairment. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Canadian Hearing Society, 271 Spadina Rd, Toronto, Ontario, M5R 2V3. Phone 1 (877) 347-3427
