Brother of Candice and Tom Austin of Walkerton. Son-in-law of Elaine Holland of Harriston, and brother-in-law of Linda and Allan Hoffarth of Breslau. Loved and remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and their families. Garry was predeceased by his parents Donald ‘Tuffy’ and Betty (Rogers) MacDougall, sister Theresa Cochrane and husband Brent, brother Roger MacDougall and wife Carole, father-in-law Everett Holland, brother-in-law Robert Holland, and great-niece Jordan (MacDougall) Camplin. Garry Robert John MacDougall was born on August 16, 1944 at 8 Delamere Gardens in Bournemouth England. He arrived in Canada by boat with this mother and brother Roger in 1946. They lived with Uncle Donald on his farm in Mount Forest. They then moved to Harriston where he lived for most of his life and made many friends. Garry married the love of his life Elizabeth (Betty) Holland on April 8, 1978. They resided in Harriston until 2019 when they moved to Mount Forest. Garry had many jobs over the years he worked on the overpass in Kitchener, London Free Press and Globe & Mail in Hamilton. He had many health scares starting in his high school days. His next job was the Cookie man at the Harriston L&M where he greeted families and treated their children to cookies to help the parents with the kids while shopping. Everyone loved to go shopping and see the Cookie man. As the years went on he was no longer able to hand out cookies and he started to carry a pocket full of quarters which he would hand out to children. Garry worked at the L&M for over 30 years. In 2005 Garry and his wife took over Suzie’s restaurant in Harriston. He was the greeter when he was not at the L&M. He would talk and talk to anyone who came into the restaurant. He was also a very good dish washer. Garry was also a Legion member for over 50 years and was a member of Kinsmen, and K-40. Garry loved pictures as you all know and it was his passion to collect and talk about the year’s gone bye. He has quite a collection of pictures and newspapers ranging over many years. He loved his little town of Harriston and the people he spoke to regularly. Thank you to the staff of the Mount Forest hospital for the care the family received. Visitation will be held at the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00pm with a Royal Canadian Legion memorial service at 5:30pm.
