MACDONALD, Gerry – Gerry passed away on Sat. Oct. 21, 2017 at 4pm at Groves Memorial Community Hospital in Fergus after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in 1949 in Souris, Prince Edward Island, Gerry was the only child of Mary MacDonald (1980) and James Donovan (1990) and special foster son to Jimmy and Helen Morrison. Beloved husband of Donna MacDonald (Newson), and cherished father of Jolene MacDonald and son-in-law Jeremy Szabo. He was adored by his grandchildren Jayna, Jonas and Joy, who were the lights of his life. Each had a special bond with Gramps. Gerry was also a much loved brother to Darlene Ching (Donovan), Lorna Donovan, Blair Donovan, Wayne Cheverie, Kevin Cheverie, Debbie Stewart (Cheverie), Karen Chaisson (Cheverie), Colleen Acorn (Cheverie), foster brother to Emmitt Bradley and much like a brother to his uncle Earl MacDonald. He was also a much loved brother in law, uncle and cousin to dozens more. Gerry was well known to many, locally and around the province. He had friends coast to coast and across the globe. Gerry and Donna spent winters in Florida and part of summers in PEI. Gerry came to Ontario in 1971 with barely a penny to his name and built, started and sold 8 businesses over the course of 40+ years. Most noteably, MacDonald Aluminum Siding, MacDonald Awning, Nulook Blinds and ProAwning. Some may even remember his French Fry wagon’s known as Rosie’s Fries. Gerry was a serial entrepreneur and loved the thrill of closing a deal or getting a sale. He was the first to lend a hand or help a friend in need all at the same time and was famous for throwing a lot of parties! Gerry was brave, courageous, fierce, stubborn, passionate and bigger than life most days. He loved cars and boats and you could usually find him golfing with friends. He will be sadly missed. The family wishes to give heartfelt thanks to the staff (Dr. Knight and nurses) at Grand River Hospital Cancer Centre, Groves Hospital, Dr. Oh, Dr. Lund and CCAC for taking such amazing care of Gerry. They went over and above to help him in his fight. A Celebration of Gerry’s Life will be held at Elmira Golf Club this Saturday, October 28, from 2pm-4pm. 40 Eldale Road, Elmira, ON. Arrangements entrusted to The Graham Giddy Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grand River Hospital Foundation (directed to Cancer Centre), Groves Hospital Foundation (directed to New Hospital) and CCAC.
