KURTZ, Maggie (née Riddell)

July 30, 1975 - October 2, 2023

Maggie was born to Al and Liz Riddell (2021, 2021) one very hot July day in 1975. She came into the world quietly, but soon her feisty character became apparent. Maggie was never shy, was always smiling with blue eyes sparkling, her charm endearing. She was called many things that were prefaced with “don’t call me Margaret!” Magpie was her father’s pet name. Her siblings (Allison (Roberto), Michael, Gary, Bryan, Ashley) preferred “Maggot” when she was especially provoking. As a child, Maggie would play hard all day and fall asleep at the supper table in her chair with an “oops, Maggie-fall-again.” Family and motherhood were an integral part of Maggie’s being; she was never far from her family of origin, or building her family of choice. Maggie was blessed with Robert (Taylor) and Richard before meeting her match (and soulmate) in Brent Kurtz. Maggie’s light was brightest when she was around Brent and they were absolutely brilliant together. Their family was rounded out with more boys; Derek, Blair and Daniel (2010). A mother of very active, multiple boys is a very special person; highly organized, multi-tasker and operating at an other-worldly level. Maggie also made time for herself through continuing her education and self-improvement, working, volunteering, organizing family members, planning functions, truck driving, motorcycle riding and connecting with friends. Recently, Maggie’s quilting projects have had significant impact in the community (sensory quilts for dementia/Alzheimer’s), baby blankets for new arrivals and memory quilts for family. When Maggie set her mind to something, she was unstoppable. Her fierce determination was legendary. Brent and Maggie always had projects on the go, had time for all people and pulled all they could out of every moment and experience. Maggie’s bright spirit and presence filled a room. Like moths to a flame, we were drawn in by her warmth and personality. Our hearts are broken. Maggie’s generosity continues as she was able to gift others through organ donation. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Centre Wellington Minor Lacrosse. All of Maggie and Brent’s children have come up through the sport and this organization and Maggie spent many years in volunteer roles on the executive council. E-transfers can be made at treasurer@cwminorlacrosse.ca. Please join Brent and Family in celebrating the life of Maggie. The family will be at the Ariss Valley Golf Course (5700 Wellington Rd 86, Ariss, ON N0B 1B0) on Sunday, December 3, from 1-4pm. Service/tribute will start at 1:30.
