Ireland, John Douglas – Of Guelph, passed away on Friday, Aug 8, 2014. Cherished and loving husband of Vera Shoemaker and the late Barbara Mendham (1989). Dearly loved father of Tracy(Bruce) Fisher, Jo-Anne Martell, Pat(Megan) Ireland, Tim(Val) Ireland. Loved Step father to Fred Kurzynski and Janice(Scott) Atkinson. Proud and loving Grandfather(Papa) to Mikayla, Megan and Caitlyn Fisher; Jordan, Mathew, Briar and Zachary Martell; Justin, Samantha, Callie and Tucker Ireland; Jamie and Shawn Ireland; Jessica Kurzynski; Rebecca and Joseph Atkinson. Adoring Great Grandfather to Issabelle, Madison, and Avaney Martell; Keeden and Kameron Kurzynski. Brother to Peg Harding, Joan(Graham) Murray. Predeceased by his parents John Gordon(1969) and Martha Emma(Hiscox)(1994) Ireland also by his brother-in-law Jim Harding(2007). Doug proudly served as a firefighter for the city of Guelph for 31 yrs. At the same time he co-ordinated his fellow firefighters or himself to drive for the Cancer Society. Also for many years he co-ordinated the firefighters fund raising drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Society. After retiring he enjoyed some travelling and building and flying his model airplanes. However he was always ready to volunteer wherever he could. Doug will always be remembered as a very caring man and will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Friends were received at the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph, Monday 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral service was held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, Aug 12, 2014, at 1:30p.m. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park. Reception followed in the Wall-Custance Family Reception Centre. Memorial contributions to charity of choice.
