HOWLETT, Jim

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Edward Howlett (71) of Puslinch, Ontario on January 4, 2024 surrounded by family at the Guelph General Hospital. James, fondly known as Jim, Jimmy, Howie or Grampa will be lovingly missed by his wife of 44 years, Lois; children Rob (Brandi) and Megan (Scott); grandchildren, Brady, Easton and Carson; sister Linda; predeceased by brother Robert (December 2023) and a host of extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory in their hearts. Jim was born to Henni and Roy Howlett on February 11, 1952 in South Porcupine, Ontario. During his early years he resided in many locations in both northern and southern Ontario. Landing in Guelph in 1966, he cemented his friendships and working relationships. Later, he finally found a place to call home in Puslinch. Jim had a fulfilling 35-year career starting at the County of Wellington followed by the Township of Puslinch where he served as a dedicated Public Works Director before retiring in 2010. He was a fun-loving guy who enjoyed games and all kinds of sports – as long as he won! Jim was a consummate party planner. In fact, it was his hotel room that was “party central” for the Centennial CVI Grade 12, ‘71 Grad trip in Quebec City where Lois & Jim met. He was also the guy who organized the annual euchre tournaments since 1976, as well as fishing trips, curling bonspiels on the pond, golf tournaments, pool parties and maple syrup taste-offs. His closest friends were treated like family and in return, he built a wonderful community around him. His sarcastic humour, family loyalty and profound presence will be missed, especially his special terms of endearment for those near and dear to his heart. The family wishes to thank the GGH Emergency Team, the Surgical Team, Medical Support Staff and the ICU Doctors and Nurses, especially Jenn and Lisa for their dedicated support in Jim’s compassionate care. Soon after losing his father at the age of 8, Jim was offered the opportunity to go to a camp funded by the local YMCA; it was a lifetime opportunity which left a lasting impact on him. A Celebration of Life will take place Sunday, January 14 at the Puslinch Community Center, 23 Brock Rd. S., Puslinch, from 1:30pm-4:30pm with remarks starting at 2pm. Arrangements entrusted to Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel (519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com). In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to make a donation in Jim’s honour to either your local YMCA or the Guelph General Hospital. A tree will be planted in memory of James (Jim) E. Howlett in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
