Bill passed away at his farm, surrounded by family, a few months shy of his 90th birthday. He was born and raised in Lima, Peru, a son to Cecil and Grace and a brother to Doris and Pamela. He came to Canada at the age of 12 to be educated at St. Andrews College (1953), and ultimately at the University of Toronto graduating in the Mining Engineering Class of 1958. He was known to classmates at St. Andrews and U of T as ‘Knobby’. A star on his high school swim team, he was also a member of the university’s varsity swim and water polo teams where he earned his Athletic “T”. A fascination with the earth sciences was nurtured by his best friend’s father which led to a lengthy and distinguished career in the mining industry. In 1969 after a working assignment in the Philippines, Bill returned to Toronto where he met and married his beloved Joyce. They moved to the farm just outside of Rockwood, Ontario in 1976 to raise four children – Brian, Mary, David, and William. His greatest joy in life was spending time with Joyce, his four children and their spouses – Elizabeth, Andre, Amy and Mara, his grandchildren and great grandson. ‘Poppa Bill’ will be missed sorely by all of his family.
