HAYTHORNTHWAITE, Elizabeth (Liz) Louise (nee Watson) – Peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, March 15, 2018 enveloped by love in her 95th year. Liz Haythornthwaite of Elora, formerly Betty Parrott of Owen Sound. Cherished mother of Pamela Wilson (William) of Kemble, Hilary East (Walter) of Windsor, and Elizabeth Hampson (Gordon) of New Zealand. Loved ‘Bibba’ to Findlay Parrott-Aitkenhead (Melissa) of London, Joshua Parrott-Aitkenhead of Sarnia, the New Zealanders: Marissa Hampson-Kelaher (Douglas) and their children Escher, Milo and Indigo; Emily Lolani (Johnny) and their children Coco and Eli; Naomi Thurlow (Sean); and Jordan Hampson. Fondly remembered by step-daughter, Caroline Haythornthwaite (Alvan Bregman) of Syracuse NY, step-granddaughter Adrienne Wilson of Melbourne, Australia, and several nieces and nephews. Survived by her sister Joan McDonald of Elora and her sister-in-law Marion Watson of Richmond Hill. Predeceased by husbands Edward (Ed) Haythornthwaite (1988) and William (Bill) Arthur Edwin Parrott (2004), her parents Jessie Hamilton Miles Watson and William Maurice Watson, her brothers John Hamilton Watson and William Townley Watson, her step-son Alistair Haythornthwaite (Eden), and brothers-in-law Frederick L. Yule and Donald A. McDonald. At sixteen Liz moved to Collingwood to attend school and care for an elderly aunt. Here she met her future husband Bill Parrott. In 1947 they came to Owen Sound where they raised their three daughters. Following an amicable divorce, Liz completed her BA at the University of Guelph where she met and married Ed Haythornthwaite. They ventured to England and later returned to Canada to spend their time between Calgary and places in the Victoria BC vicinity while running a successful book business. Following Ed’s sudden death in 1988 Liz returned to Ontario to be closer to family. Liz loved life and never lost her sense of humour or her flare for dramatics!! Theatre was her passion and many hours were devoted to acting and directing in Owen Sound’s Little Theatre. She continued acting with Guelph Little Theatre and the Elora Community Theatre. A professional story teller, Liz founded the Children’s Literature Roundtable in Guelph. She devoted time helping others through volunteer work with Hospice, the Elora Festival & Singers, and mentoring troubled youth with Portage through St. John’s Anglican Church in Elora. She derived great pleasure from reading, solving New York Times Crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy and British drama and playing card games, all of which kept her mind sharp and focused. Liz put her life on hold when she returned to Owen Sound to support family prior to Bill’s death in 2004. They had maintained their friendship throughout the passing years. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the following: Heritage River Retirement Home in Elora for the five and a half wonderful years Liz resided there, Dr. Kate Anderson for her support and guidance as Liz’s physician, PSW Erica Kraehling with whom Liz had formed a bond at Heritage River, Bayshore PSWs: Crystal, Stephanie, Sierra, Dorothy and Debbie, and Dr. Chris Lund and the palliative care team for their efforts in Liz’s final days. Words are not enough to express the gratitude felt for RoseAnne Desmarais and Bruce Chapman to whom Liz’s continued care was entrusted. RoseAnne was Liz’s devoted PSW for several years. Liz was welcomed into their home, and they into the hearts of the family. They loved and cared for Liz as if she was their own mother. The family are forever grateful for these gifts which brought the peace and trust needed to ensure that Liz’s final journey would be completed as she wanted. Cremation has taken place. A service and celebration of life will be announced later. Donations in remembrance of Liz may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church in Elora, the Elora Festival & Singers or Hospice Wellington can be made through the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Arthur.
