FULTON, Charles Derry

Following a long and courageous battle with cancer, on October 3, 2022, Charles Derry Fulton passed away at home, at the age of 68. He was surrounded with the love of his wife Nancy and daughters Laura and Kathleen. Charlie was the firstborn son of parents Gordon and Joan Fulton (nee Goodley) and had two younger brothers, Mark (Maggie) and Paul (Ruth). Although Charlie was born and raised in Toronto he developed a love for all things rural, and moved to Guelph during university. An ever-curious intellectual, Charlie earned his degree in Food Science and spent his career working as a chemist at Lab Services in Guelph, using his keen interest in computer science to modernize their systems in the ‘80s whilst mentoring his staff with an enthusiasm for new technologies. Charlie was adored by many, and kept long-standing friendships from his childhood in Willowdale, through university, and until his too-soon passing. His friends and their families spent many joyful occasions in each others’ company, for holidays, cottaging, road tripping and traveling abroad. Charlie’s passion for new ideas is remembered fondly by those who were fortunate enough to chat with him: he was quick to laugh, and always wanted to know more about others. He loved to read, to play guitar, to garden, and was especially mechanically-minded, evidenced by his fascination with aviation, and interest in all things motorized. Charlie was introduced by his best friend to Nancy, the love of his life and mother to his daughters. They married in 1983 and lived in Guelph, and then Elora, where they could gaze out over the Grand River from their home. Charlie loved to kayak and later, to sail out on the waters of Lac Papineau in Quebec, where he and Nancy spent their summers at the cottage. In recent years they explored the lake on their pontoon. In retirement, they traveled whenever they could, taking dazzling cruises to foreign lands. Charlie will be remembered fondly by his many close friends, and especially by his loving wife and girls, and his four grandchildren: Kyle, Maya, Liam and Ruby. He asked for no formal memorial service, but that his loved ones gather to share hugs and memories as they wish. He would have encouraged friends to donate blood in his memory, as he had often donated to Canada Blood Services himself.
