FLETCHER, Douglas Bruce

Passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 3, 2024 with family by his side, at Royal Terrace Long Term Care Home in Palmerston in his 93rd year. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Jean (Laidlaw) and children Marilyn (Leigh) Roeger, Janice (Hugh) MacDonald, Robert (Cathy), and John (Robin). Loved grandpa of Shauna and Caroline Roeger, Amy (Nick) Sanders, Scott (Elizabeth) MacDonald, Brandon (Becca) MacDonald, Jessica Fletcher, Charlotte, Glenn, Lynn and Yvonne Fletcher, and great grandpa to Hailey, Kate, Thomas, Hannah, Olivia, Jack and Luke. Predeceased by his parents, Bruce and Evelyn Fletcher, brother, Roy, and brothers-in-law, Don Blyth, Watty Day and Harry Lasachuk. Survived by his sisters Joyce (Don) Blyth, and Marg (Watty/Harry) Day, and sister-in-law Shirley (Roy) Fletcher. Doug was raised in Erin Township and moved to Marden in 1948. He operated a successful beef and cash crop family farm. He and Jean formed the Fletcher dance band along with friends and family members entertaining at old time dances for 50 years. Doug had a passion for flying, and earned his pilot’s license as a young man, and also became a competent auto body mechanic. He was a member and an elder at Knox Presbyterian Church in Guelph for many years. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Royal Terrace, Groves Memorial Hospital, and Heritage River for their excellent care. Friends were received at Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph, on Thursday, March 7, 2024 from 7:00pm – 9:00pm, and on Friday, March 8, 2024, from 12:30pm – 1:30pm with the funeral that followed at 1:30pm in the funeral home chapel. Reception followed directly after the service in the Wall-Custance Family Reception Centre. Interment will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to Samaritan’s Purse or Groves Memorial Hospital would be appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of Douglas (Doug) B. Fletcher in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
