Jean Margaret Cummer passed away peacefully on Sunday July 4, 2021, at Eden House Care Facility, Guelph, Ontario in her 92nd year. She was born December 15, 1928, in Toronto to Dorothy and Robert Arnott. She is survived by her children Brian Chyc (Kathy), Ted Chyc, Raymond Chyc (Shelley), Bob Chyc (Ingrid) and Shelley Jensen and loving grandmother of Rachel, Lauren, Jessica, Laura, Jason, Emily, Kylie, Sam, Krista and Aimee, and great grand-children Hunter, Aidyn and Grace. She is predeceased by her parents and brother Robert Arnott, her husbands Milton Chyc, Alfred Jensen, Jim Holloway and Bill Cummer. Jean studied nursing at St. Josephs in Peterborough in 1948 and later graduated from the University of Toronto School of Nursing in 1953. She had nursing jobs at Sunnybrook, Toronto and Peterborough. In later years she was a nursing home inspector in London, Ontario. Jean lived a life of adventure. She moved many times, even as a young child. She thought it was genetic as her Dad liked to move around in her early years in Toronto. She lived all over Ontario, Colorado and Victoria, BC. Jean loved to travel and went to many places around the world including Scotland, England, Australia, New Zealand and most of the USA, including Hawaii where she had a favourite place to stay in Kona on the big island of Hawaii. Jean had many friends in the Fergus and Guelph area and was the editor of Pine Line Newsletter for Pine Meadows, Belwood and the Sentinel Newsletter for the Evergreen Seniors Centre, Guelph. Jean wrote a beautiful book of poems and life history for her family and in that she wrote that in 1938 “My Dad bought me my first bike on the condition I do a paper route. I rode all over Toronto, holding on to the side of street cars, like all the kids did in those days. What a marvellous life!”. She also wrote about her family and friends including this “How can one person be so blessed? My family and friends are the greatest! They have been my pride and joy. They have great personalities, a sharp sense of humour, and loving relationships. They have lived through my chaos, and all came through with flying colours. They have given me love throughout the years, fun in our social events and courage in many difficult times and have been a lifelong joy. Indeed, I have led a blessed and magical life!” Due to Provincial COVID-19 restrictions a private family funeral service was held at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David Street South, Fergus, Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Memorial service and interment at Belsyde Cemetery, 400 Thistle Street, Fergus. Jean’s family wishes to extend their thanks and deepest appreciation to everyone at Eden House Care Facility in Guelph for the outstanding care she received in her recent years. It would rejoice Jean’s family as a token and tribute to Jean’s memory that in lieu of flowers donations would be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation.
