It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of Dorothy after a courageous battle with cancer at Arbour Trails in Guelph in her 95th year. She was born in Eramosa Township and is predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Clarence Comfort, parents Harold and Laura (nee Swanston) Oakes, and grandson Chris Fletcher. She is survived by her brother, Ken Oakes and daughters Linda Myers (Robert), Sharon Fletcher, and Beverly (Jim Craig). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren; Brendan Myers, Nuala Reilly (Shawn), Niamh Webster (Andrew), Roisin Derbis (Bartek), Bridget Gole (Terry), Ciaran Myers (Angela), Turlough Myers (Krystal Moss), Jude Fletcher (Wendy), Dawn Percher (Cam) and Elliot Craig (Krista), as well as 22 great grandchildren. Dorothy graduated from the Guelph General Hospital School of Nursing with the class of 1949. When children came along, she stayed home but kept busy sewing drapes for a company, hooking rugs and teaching the craft of rug hooking in the community. She was a member of the Dublin Street United Church choir for many years. Many summers were spent at the YM-YWCA Camp Nagiwa as the nurse. After our father retired, they moved to Ayton to build their dream home and start a maple syrup business which they ran for 15 years. They returned to Guelph to reside at the Village by the Arboretum and later Arbour Trails. At Arbour Trails, she knitted children’s sweaters, dolls and toys that she sold in the general store. Each year she donated the proceeds to Women in Crisis and Micheal’s House charities. Our family would like to thank the staff at The Village of Arbour Trails but particularly the PSWs who cared for our mother with kindness, respect, and compassion. They filled her final days with smiles. We would also like to acknowledge Dr. Aaron Smith for ensuring her final days were comfortable. Cremation has taken place. Our thanks to Scott Young at Wall-Custance Funeral Home for his support and guidance. Celebration of Life to take place on November 12, 2022 from 2:00 – 4:00pm at Reid Hall in the Village by the Arboretum, 221 Stone Rd E, Guelph. A private interment will follow at a later date. Those planning to attend should email Sharon (sfletcher241@gmail.com) to confirm their intent no later than November 5, 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations to Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis, P.O. Box 1451, Guelph, ON, N1H 6N9 would be appreciated. Mom thought that you should smile everyday and look for the positive in every situation. That’s how she lived her live and taught us to do the same. A tree will be planted in memory of Dorothy M. Comfort in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
COMFORT, Dorothy May (nee Oakes)
