87, long-time resident of Fergus/Elora, died November 4, 2023 at Hospice Wellington after receiving excellent end-of-life care from the hospice staff. Gene was born in Fort MacLeod, Alberta, studied psychology at the University of Alberta and the University of Ottawa, and worked for 28 years as a psychologist at the University of Guelph, in Counselling Services. In retirement, Gene took up sailing and travelling and enjoyed sunny winters in Florida and Mexico. Gene spent the last seven weeks of his life at Hospice Wellington where he enjoyed daily visits from Beverley and other family members and constant, tender care from nurses and PSWs. He retained his witty sense of humour to the end and was regarded by the staff with affection. Gene is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beverley; his three children and their spouses, Stephanie (Charles) Bagasan, Grant (Tracey McLean) Brailsford, Laura (Clark) Chernak; his grandchildren, Erika, Sacha, Scotia, Lachlan, Blake and Ezri; and great-granddaughters, Ursula and Wren. Gene will be missed by his family and friends. Gene is memorialized with a Sweet Gum tree and plaque in the University of Guelph Arboretum.
