BOYES, Gerald David

April 21, 1934 - August 31, 2023

Peacefully passed away on August 31, 2023, at Listowel Memorial Hospital, in his 89th year of life. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (2014), father to Kathy (Lyn) Huxley, a cherished father-in-law to Kim Boyes (Ken 2014), and grandpa to Chad Huxley (Karlijn), Brandy Huxley, and Mitchell Boyes. He was also a brother of Lloyd (Irene) Boyes of St. Catharines and Pat Long (Chris 2016) of Niagara Falls, as well as a brother-in-law to Heather (Derek) Costello of Niagara Falls. Cremation has already taken place, and a private interment has been held at Huxley Cemetery in Hillsburgh. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Wellington or a charity of your choice online at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com or in-person at the funeral home. Dad’s journey began on April 21, 1934, in Sunridge, Ontario. In 1951, at the age of 17, he relocated with his family to Niagara Falls. It was there that he met Mom, Barb, at Morrison United Church’s young people’s group, and they were married on December 1, 1956. They started their life together in Brampton, where Gerry worked at the Avro Arrow aircraft plant until its government-mandated closure. Gerry and Barb then both found employment at Dominion stores, eventually relocating to Guelph. When I (Kathy) was six months old, they moved to Orton and lived on Harry Moore’s farm, where they forged a lifelong friendship. After his day job, Dad assisted Harry with various chores and traveled many miles over the years. Ken joined the family in 1964. Dad ventured into the plumbing trade and eventually established his own business, “Boyes Plumbing,” which he operated until his retirement at the age of 67. In 1968, our family moved up the road to a new house built by Dad and his father. Ken joined the business, and eventually, Ken, Kim, and Mitchell moved into the house. Dad and Mom set up a granny flat home where Dad lived until October 2021. Dad dedicated many years to restoring antique cars and trucks. Together with Mom, he actively participated in the Vintage Chevy Club and HASC events, using their 1971 camper special truck and fifth-wheel trailer. They frequented car-themed flea markets and attended the International Plowing Match wherever it was held, often in the company of Marvin and Donna Hodgins. Dad loved swimming three times a week in Fergus, followed by coffee time at Tim Hortons and attending Mimosa United Church. In the fall of 2021, Dad’s health began to decline, and he could no longer drive or walk easily. Consequently, he moved to Caressant Care Retirement Home in Listowel, where he enjoyed his time with the exceptional staff. The family extends gratitude to Dad’s special friends who, over the years, provided him with transportation to meals, appointments, church, and other events. It was very much appreciated. Heartfelt thanks go to Dr. Hood for his care and concern, extending to the very last day. Lastly, these last couple of months were truly challenging for Dad, and the staff at Listowel Hospital, especially on the 2nd floor, went above and beyond to keep him comfortable.
