Gerald (Gerry) Barnhill passed away peacefully on November 19th in Kitchener. Gerry graduated with a degree in Physical Education from the University of Toronto in 1951. After teaching and coaching basketball and football in Paris, Port Credit and Gordon Graydon high schools, he moved to Fergus where he became the Principal at CWDHS. In 1975, he moved to the Wellington County Board of Education as a Superintendent of Schools, where he remained until his retirement in 1988. In retirement, Gerry was an active participant in the community. He refereed basketball, was Chairman of the Groves Memorial Community Hospital board, and golfed daily. Gerry was predeceased by his beautiful wife, Mary (2008). He leaves his loving family, sons John and Paul, Paul’s wife Colleen, grandsons Jason and David (Jaime), and four great grandchildren: Finn, Carleigh, Mason and Cole. He will also be missed by his devoted nieces Anne and Emily and nephews David and Matthew. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerry’s memory may be made to the Sunnyside Foundation, and are greatly appreciated by his family. Visitation will be held on Thursday November 25, 2021 from 2:00 – 5:00pm and 6:00 – 9:00pm at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David Street South, Fergus. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday November 26, 2021 at 11:00am at the Funeral Home, immediately followed by a reception. Proof of vaccination MUST be shown in order to attend the funeral service and reception. Masks must be worn at all times and physical distancing guidelines are to be followed.
