The University of Guelph in partnership with the United Way of Guelph and Wellington and the Volunteer Centre of Guelph-Wellington are calling for nominations for the second annual Dr. William Winegard exemplary volunteer involvement awards.
The awards, held in honour of former University of Guelph president Dr. William Winegard, annually recognize the significant community involvement of a University of Guelph student, staff, and faculty member.
"Reaching out has provided me with immense fulfillment over the years, and I’m delighted that, through these awards, students, faculty and staff will be formally acknowledged for their volunteer efforts in the community," said Dr. Winegard, who came to the University of Guelph three years after its founding in 1964 and served as president until 1975.
Dr. Winegard remains active in the Guelph community through his involvement with many organizations including Hospice Wellington, College Heights Secondary School literacy programs, and as a member of the Guelph Rotary.
The Dr. William Winegard awards were created in 2007 in an effort to highlight the volunteerism of those in the University community who significantly contribute to Guelph and Wellington County. “The general spirit of generosity at the U of G is well known, but the invaluable contributions of individuals are sometimes overlooked,” said Cathy Taylor, Executive director of the Volunteer Centre of Guelph-Wellington. “These awards give us the opportunity to recognize the students, staff and faculty members whose volunteerism significantly contributes to the wellbeing of our community.”
Award organizers are calling for nominations of current university staff, faculty, or students who have devoted significant time and effort through volunteer involvement with community organizations including municipal boards, community fundraising, community social health and service agencies, and other non-profit organizations.
Nomination packages are available online at www.volunteerguelphwellington.on.ca and should be submitted by March 20. The awards will be presented on April 3 in preparation for the annual National Volunteer Week, which is being held April 27 to May 3 celebrating this year’s theme From Compassion to Action.
