Nomination period closed; candidate list finalized for fall election

The nomination period for the Oct. 22 municipal election officially ended at 2pm on July 27.

The following is the final list of candidates across Wellington County.

Centre Wellington

In Centre Wellington there is a mayor position as well as six ward councillor positions.

Incumbent Kelly Linton is being challenged by current councillor Fred Morris in the 2018 race for mayor.

Ian MacRae and incumbent Don Fisher are running for Ward 1 councillor.

For Ward 2  Kim Jefferson  is taking on incumbent Kirk McElwain.

There is a three-way race for Ward 3 between incumbent Dean Workman, Bob Foster and Bruce Lloyd.

Ward 4 also has a three-way race between Vinnie Green, Neil Dunsmore and Paul Whitaker.

Incumbent Stephen Kitras and Kent Allison will go head to head in Ward 5.

Incumbent Steven VanLeeuwen is the lone candidate in Ward 6. He will win by acclamation.

Erin

In Erin there is a mayor position and four at-large councillor positions.

Incumbent Allan Alls is being challenged by Paul Dermott and Michael Dehn for mayor.

There are eight candidates for four councillor positions: Rob Smith (incumbent) and John Brennan (incumbent), Jamie Cheyne, Mike Robins, John Gainor, Cynthia Anderson-Mancia, Douglas Hodgson and Liz Armstrong.

Guelph-Eramosa

Guelph-Eramosa accepted nominations for a mayor and four ward councillor positions.

Current councillor David Wolk is taking on incumbent Chris White for mayor.

Newcomers Carol Easton and Bruce Dickieson are in a race for the Ward 1 position.

Incumbent Corey Woods is being challenged in Ward 2 by Jo-Anne Costello.

Incumbent Louise Marshall will go head to head with Steven Liebig in Ward 3.

Incumbent Mark Bouwmeester will be challenged by Natalie Jaroszewski in Ward 4.

Mapleton

In Mapleton Township, nominations were accepted for mayor and four at-large councillors.

Mayoral candidate Neil Driscoll (incumbent) will be  running against current county councillor Gregg Davidson.

There are only four nominations for councillor, meaning all will be acclaimed. The candidates are incumbents Marlene Ottens, Dennis Craven and Michael Martin, and newcomer Paul Douglas.

Minto

In Minto, nominations were accepted for a mayor, deputy mayor and five at-large councillor positions.

Running for mayor are George Bridge (incumbent) and Terry Fisk.

Current Minto councillor David Turton is the only deputy mayor candidate and will win by acclamation.

Geoff Gunson, Judy Dirksen (incumbent), Jean Anderson (incumbent),  Glen Hall, Scott Marshall, Ron Elliot (incumbent) and Mark Mackenzie are seeking council positions.

Puslinch

In Puslinch, nominations were accepted for a mayor and four at-large councillor positions.

James Seeley will be running against incumbent Dennis Lever for mayor.

Incumbents Ken Roth, John Sepulis and Matthew Bulmer are again running for council, as are newcomers Steven Dorgo and Jessica Goyda.

Wellington North

In Wellington North, nominations were accepted for a mayor and four ward council positions.

Incumbent Mayor Andy Lennox will once again be run for the position. He will face former mayor Ray Tout.

Incumbents Dan Yake (Ward 1), Sherry Burke (Ward 2), Lisa Hern (Ward 3) and Steve McCabe (Ward 4) are the only candidates to file for council, and thus will be acclaimed.

Wellington County

For Wellington County council, there are nine ward seats available.

Dave Anderson (incumbent) is running again in Ward 1 – and is to be acclaimed.

In Ward 2, newcomer Earl Campbell is the only person seeking the post.

Campbell Cork is running against incumbent Gary Williamson for Ward 3 county councillor.

There are six candidates for the Ward 4 county council seat: Ross Chaulk, Jake Bouwman, Penny Renken, Wayne Baker, Allan Hons and Stephen O’Neill.

Incumbent Mary Lloyd is the sole candidate in Ward 5 and will win the seat by acclamation.

Incumbent Shawn Watters will be in a head-to-head battle with Diane Ballantyne for the Ward 6 seat.

Incumbent county councillors Don McKay (Ward 7)  and Doug Breen (Ward 8) are the lone candidates in their respective wards and will be acclaimed.

In Ward 9, current Town of Erin councillor Jeff Duncan is running against incumbent Pierre Brianceau.

Wellington Catholic District School Board

Incumbent Cassandra O’Donnell (nee Chornoboy) is the lone candidate to represent the Erin, Guelph-Eramosa and Puslinch.

Andrew Finoro (incumbent) is the lone trustee candidate to represent Centre Wellington, Mapleton, Minto and Wellington North.

Conseil Scolaire Viamonde

Denis Trudel and Pascale Thibodeau have filed for seats on the French public school board to represent the counties of Wellington, Middlesex, Perth and Huron and the Region of Waterloo.

Upper Grand District School Board

The seat for trustee representing Ward 6 in Guelph and Puslinch Township will be contested by Jolly Bedi, Aisha Jahangir, James Kerr, Kevin Bowman, Raquel Beitz, Bernie Kehler, Seleena Reid and incumbent Marty Fairbairn.

In Centre Wellington incumbent Barbara Lustgarten-Evoy and Jesse Wootton are in a two-way battle for the trustee position.

Jen Edwards is the lone candidate to represent  Erin, Guelph-Eramosa and East Garafraxa.

Shawn McLeod, Robin Ross and Rob Unsworth are running for trustee in the area representing Wellington North, Minto and Mapleton.

Conseil Scolaire Catholique MonAvenir

Genevieve Grenier and Blaise Liaki are looking for a trustee position on the French Catholic board to represent Wellington and Dufferin counties, the City of Brampton and the Town of Caledon.
