FERGUS – All students in Grades 4 through 8 at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Fergus worked diligently this spring, right to the last day of school, on a variety of cross-curricular projects in French and fine arts that focused on helping the planet. Under the guidance of their French teachers Mme Pegelo and Mme Nuholli they developed French vocabulary related to environmental issues such as the use of plastics and energy conservation. Various drawings were completed with a final culminating activity of a group sculpture project where each student wrote French messages on a piece of plastic that would normally be headed to a recycle bin at best or the oceans as a worse case scenario. These plastic pieces were then secured together on a frame to create a sculpture of the school mascot, the Gator.
Officials thank SCS Metals Limited, Fergus who generously donated scrap metal for the base of the sculpture, and St. Joseph school alumnus Luke Hummel of Big L Welding who donated his time and equipment to come back to his elementary school and weld the frame together coordinated with the help of school social worker Mr. Lane. “Thanks to the hard work of all students and staff, the final touches were completed to let the world know that St. Joseph’s Gators care about the earth and all its inhabitants! Il n’y a pas une planète B!” school officials state.
