Last Saturday, the Timbits soccer group in Fergus held its last game of the season.
Over the summer we appreciated the work of coach Barry and coach Mike, who happened to both have sons on our daughter’s team. Like most amateur organized Sports, the organization is reliant on capable men and women volunteering to give kids a good experience with sport.
Coaching isn’t easy, but both guys, as well as dozens of other parents coaching other teams, seemed to be such naturals with young people. Long on patience, big on laughs, parents appreciate their time.
As soccer ends a new season will start. Arenas will fill with parents watching winter Sports.
This week the Advertiser features numerous athletes of note, from national team members to provincial champions. Wellington County puts out its fair share of talented kids.
For some time we have attempted to cover more Sports in our Newspaper and on-line. It used to be some local Newspapers had page after page of coverage dedicated to recreational activity.
There remains no doubt the Newspaper business is pretty tough. Many operations have been forced to cut costs and sadly that included Sports-writer jobs. We can think of many reporters who were the principle story tellers of local Sports for their community.
We’re looking at this issue more seriously in what we see as a missing element in today’s local media.
It’s our hope to see a conversation start about how to help celebrate local sport. Please drop us a line with your thoughts on local Sports coverage.
