New garbage bag rates, rural pickup in Puslinch

As the price per garbage bag goes up, rural pickup begins throughout Wellington County.

On May 18, Puslinch council briefly reviewed correspondence on the new prices that will be charged for Wellington County garbage bags.

The notification outlined the increased cost for both small and large garbage bags.

Because the change happens on July 1, any deliveries before that time would be at the current price per case.

The per-case price for large bags increases from $350 to $400 while the per-case price for small bags increases from $200 to $300.

Mayor Dennis Lever asked if the township had ordered additional bags in anticipation of demand.

Councillor Matthew Bulmer commented the bags will be available at the Aberfoyle Farmers Market.

Lever suggested the market have a good supply.

He added though the price increase is not significant – it will be to individuals who are used to going to the transfer station.

Councillor Susan Fielding asked whether there will be communication plan regarding increased garbage pickup.

Lever said Wellington County has a big communication plan being rolled out.

Residents are also being delivered two new larger blue boxes.

Lever said he understood that the idea is to match dates of urban and rural pickup within municipalities where possible.

Wellington County councillor Don McKay, who was in the audience during the meeting, added the days of urban and rural pickup will match.

“The only difference will be in Centre Wellington, because it is so large,” said McKay.

“There, Highway 6 is being used as a split – where residents to the east and west of the highway will have pickup on different days.”

In Puslinch, since urban pickup is on Fridays, McKay anticipated rural pickup will be scheduled on Fridays as well.

He added there will be pickup along Highway 6.

Councillor Susan Fielding noted that “depending on traffic, that could be a little scary.”
